At the heart of SC21 is a community of participants, providers, practitioners and assessors, all working together to help businesses improve performance and build long-term resilience. Providers play an important role within this ecosystem, bringing specialist expertise that helps organisations turn insight into action.
In our latest SC21 Provider Spotlight, we meet Adrian Martin, creator of Conscious Excellence, an approach that combines psychometric testing, coaching and experiential learning to develop both people and processes. Martin is also Managing Director of Strategic Business Development & Support Limited. Blending individual development with proven continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean Sigma and Theory of Constraints, Adrian helps organisations better understand opportunities, make informed decisions and create the conditions for sustainable growth. Find out more about Adrian and why he is involved in SC21, below.
Tell us about Conscious Excellence and Strategic Business Development & Support (SBD&S)
I founded Strategic Business Development & Support in 2012 after working in business transformation, both as a manager in a variety of industries and an employed business consultant, working on government contracts including the Manufacturing Advisory Service.
Today I work with, and support, organisations across a wide range of industries including aerospace, automotive and hydrogen refuelling to improve both their peoples skills and processes. That can be either a light touch coaching and mentoring service using Conscious Excellence, or becoming embedded in the business at senior level driving and supporting culture change and business transformation to embed success and growth.
Why SC21?
SC21 aligns very well with the way I work and provides structure to improvement. SC21 starts with the Baseline Maturity Assessment, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the business and giving clear indications on where the business needs to start to improve its performance. That’s where I come in, having spent a number of years supporting businesses to systemise and grow as well as developing leadership skills within those businesses.
Tell us more
As a business coach, I work with both early stage and mature businesses, helping them set their direction and build plans for achieving long and short term goals.
I often work alongside leadership teams, setting the direction, while also developing management capability and helping to create the right culture for improvement and growth.
My background includes four and a half years at Inflite Engineering, where I was heavily involved in business transformation projects. I helped with the identification of current and future ERP needs as well as the implementation of a system with full project and risk management as well as the culture change required for this type of work to succeed.
I have also recently worked with Hykit, a start-up JCB spin-off operating in the hydrogen refuelling sector. There, I’ve coached and mentored the quality department to develop a gated New Product Introduction process that fitted the needs of this hydrogen refuelling business as well as giving advice and direction on attaining a quality standard.
My range of experience helps too. Here are some links to case studies of work that I have performed for other businesses.

Tell us something about you
I would be the one working alongside you on your project primarily, unless you need some specialist help with ERP customisation or perhaps some psychometric testing which I can interpret where I will use a trusted associate to provide these services.
Outside of work, I am a keen motorcyclist and compete in road racing. I have won a couple of championships and also enjoy riding off road with my teenage son, Luke.
